Modeling
Energy system modeling quantifies the impact of energy management decisions. We use existing software like HOT2000 and AkWarm to simulate energy consumption in buildings and develop original software to serve other industries. Kemp was the lead developer of the Fugitive Emissions Abatement Simulation Toolkit (FEAST) to quantify the impact of leak detection and repair programs on methane emissions from natural gas systems. Kemp also led development of the Vessel Energy Analysis Tool now used to support energy audits of fishing vessels in Alaska and provide a framework for considering the impact of hybrid diesel-electric or fuel cell power systems.
Research
Kempy Energetics conducts original research into emission reduction opportunities and computational methods. Kemp’s work on methane emission mitigation was the first to develop a dynamic simulation of leak detection and repair programs in the natural gas industry and was published in Environmental Science and Technology. Kemp also developed a neural network approach to interpreting salmon otoliths that is published in Fisheries Research. Kemp’s research into fishing vessel energy consumption and subsequent model development is available in public reports hosted on this website. We relish opportunities to develop new datasets and methods to simulate novel energy efficiency measures and publish our findings.
Energy auditing
Energy audits empower businesses, home owners and boat captains to make practical improvements to their buildings or vessels to reduce energy consumption and save money. Energy audits consist of up to three parts: measuring the performance of existing systems, modeling the impact of proposed changes and communicating the results in a report and/or conversations. Clients use energy audits to inform their decisions, apply for funding and document the impact of their energy efficiency efforts. Kempy Energetics has conducted more than fifty energy audits on fishing vessels, dozens of audits in residential buildings and 5 audits of commercial buildings.
